"Young children respond to gestures and
movement before they react to the spoken word. They
understand and explore sound before they learn to
speak. They draw pictures before they form letters.
They dance and act out stories before they learn to
read."
Lucy School is located on a 17-acre farm in
Middletown, MD. A 19th century barn has been renovated
into a “state of the art” facility with early learning
spaces influenced by the Milan School of Design/Reggio
Emilia (an internationally known visual arts preschool
in Italy) for the preschool programs, and is currently constructing a new 'green' building which will house the school's primary programs starting fall 2008. Through carefully designed use of natural
light and warm colors and attention to flexible spaces
and cozy corners, children are provided with a
living-learning environment that is homey-comfortable
and at the same time inspires curiosity and love for
play, imagination and learning. We have also consulted
with nationally recognized experts in the early
childhood field in developing our outdoor play/learning
spaces.
Years of planning and experience have gone into the
creation of this innovative arts-based institution for
early childhood development. The curriculum has evolved
out of more than twenty years of research, testing and
demonstration of concepts and practices that best
develop the capacities of children to learn and
flourish. Several studies and reports document that
children exposed to the arts at a young age are better
able to master reading, writing and math than children
who are exposed solely to academics. Gains go well
beyond the basics and test scores. Children become
better thinkers, develop higher-order skills, and deepen
their inclination to learn.
