Little Lucy: Sing and Sign
Music, Sign Language and Creative Exploration for Infants and Toddlers
Spring 2008 classes: Tuesdays, April 1 - May 20
Music is an ancient form of human expression. The main objective of "Little Lucy Sing and Sign" is to teach music and signing skills to parents and their children that will foster self-expression and creativity. Participants in this 8-week course experience music through singing, signing (American Sign Language), playing simple rhythm instruments, movement, and sensory exploration. In the toddler and preschool class, hands-on visual arts projects extend the musical experiences. In addition to signs that accompany the songs, parents will be introduced to "home signs" each week that facilitate communication and language learning. Singing, signing and program activities are aimed at increasing children's sensory awareness, motor development, and language skills, while parents learn the innate power of music to calm or motivate children throughout the day.
"Little Lucy" teacher, Valerie Carroll, a master artist for the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning Through the Arts for more than 21 years, has worked extensively with young children ages 6 months - five years. Victoria Brown, Ph.D. serves as the sign consultant. Victoria, founder of Lucy School and a former professor of Theatre Arts at Gallaudet University, is fluent in American Sign Language.
