Summer Programs
Integrating the elements and aesthetics of nature into the learning process, Lucy School provides an arts-based curriculum bursting with opportunities for joy and creative self-expression through drama, creative movement, dance, puppetry, music, and visual arts. Lucy School will resume summer sessions in the summer of 2009, upon completion of our new Green Building . Come join us then - and for now just read on to see a sample of what summer at Lucy School is all about!

Overview

The Lucy School summer program provides creative arts experiences (including drama, music, creative movement, and visual arts) that enhance the intellectual, emotional, physical, social and creative development of children - and that are fun!

  • The arts are integrated as a lively and dynamic learning medium for young children that nurtures the need for play and fosters active learning.
  • Multisensory experiences are integrated into the arts activities and all activities are adapted to accommodate children's different learning styles.

In the Lucy School summer program, projects are introduced through related literature and an introductory drama experience:

  • Drama is used to introduce and create the learning environment, foster dramatic play and present 'living through' learning experiences.
  • Music, Movement and Dance enhance the learning experience and facilitate multi-sensory learning; and
  • Visual Arts, based on Reggio Emilio, provide for creative self-expression.

The arts serve as the foundation for daily activities.

Art experiences enhance motivation and curiosity for learning and continued exploration in free choice play that takes place in our large dramatic play and block building area, and outdoors on two large playgrounds for ball play, bike riding, sand and water play, and lots of climbing opportunities to exercise large motor skills.

Many of our summer arts activities are outdoors on our 17-acre farm, where nature exploration inspires curiosity and aesthetic awareness.

SUMMER 2007

Using drama, creative movement and dance to create the journey and place, and integrating music, sensory exploration, and visual arts to enhance the experience, children will engage their problem solving skills during our fun-filled adventures. On the last day of each session, parents, in role as reporters, will come to interview the children about their travels and join us in celebrating our 'return home.'

Session One: The Enchanted Forest
A friendly elf invites us on a journey to an enchanted forest. She needs our help! This adventure will take place inside (our barn beams as trees) and outside in our own Explorer Woods. We'll draw, paint and sculpt enchanted plants and animals for our scenery, and keep a daily Journey Journal. How will we get there? What equipment will we need? What adventures will we encounter? Our journey is no more limited than our imaginations! Parents, in the role of news reporters, will be invited to join us in our ending celebration.

Session Two: Journey to the Moon and Beyond!
We'll turn our large barn space into the galaxy (creating stars and planets to hang from netting), fashion our own spacesuits and gear, build a rocket ship in the Lucy School - and blast off into outer space. What planets will we visit? And what wonders will we uncover? K-2nd graders discover their rocket ship has turned into a time machine! Will they return to the right place at the right time? If so, parents, in the role of reporters, will be invited to interview the returning astronauts!

Early Threes: A Visit with Little Bear
We will explore the stories of Little Bear from Frank Asch's literature, including Moondance, Mooncake, and Happy Birthday, Moon. Little Bear will need our help in working on his friendship with Moon! Please join us on the last Friday of this four-week session as we help Little Bear celebrate his birthday with the moon.
